St
Thomas' Mission Church awaiting restoration
Niwbwrch
(Newborough) is a village in the ward of Rhosyr
in the south west of Anglesey.
The
area has great environmental potential with links to the
coastal footpath and scenic rural footpaths through and
around Newborough Warren and Newborough Forest. The area
has triple SSI status and is an area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. It is steeped in history and legend with links
to the Princes of Gwynedd
and Llanddwyn Island and
the story of Santes
Dwynwen.
After
lengthy community consultation, concern was expressed
by a majority of local people that currently there is
nowhere for the young people to meet and no local activities
for community residents. The strong demand for a building
to provide a wide range of amenities for all ages, sections
and groups within the community was taken up by a group
of residents of Niwbwrch
who are now established as
Criw
Niwbwrch Cyf.
‘Criw
Niwbwrch Cyf’ is a community owned company
that will manage and provide the resources for these amenities.
The
company will focus on the restoration of a disused community
building (St Thomas’ Mission Church Hall –
also known as Eglwys Bach)
to provide a meeting place for a variety of activities
for all sections of the community.
