ALLOTMENTS
A meeting
was held at Eglwys Bach, Newborough on Tuesday 3rd
February to discuss the setting up of allotments at
a County Council site designated as potentially suitable
for the purpose, subject to conditions. Below are
notes taken from this meeting.
Present:
Mike and
Carolyn Dean
Garry and Sandra Taylor
Chris and Ken Bowler
Apologies:
Geraint Owen
The size
of the designated plot to be found at the eastern
end of the school playing field is approx 1340m².
Allotments are generally 250m², therefore:
250m² = 5 allotments
200m² = 6 allotments
150m² = 8 allotments
Currently,
nine names are on the list of interested residents;
possibly eight ½ plots can be used. If the
site could be enlarged by leasing extra land to the
east, this would provide more allotments if they were
eventually needed and would cost very little more
to set up with funding.
Concern was
expressed about the situation of the plot being slightly
out of the village re security. Palisade-type fencing
needs to be on at least two sides of the plot, to
be planted with hedging on the outer side for appearance.
The nearness of the bungalows on the other side of
the road to be taken into account.
An entrance
from the main road would need to be passed by Highways
planning etc to cost £159 for application for
planning permission.
Water supply
is close to the perimeter fence, the water grid is
situated on the footpath.
If the group
is to go ahead and seek to lease the plot from the
CC, legal fees to be paid for by the group, this would
be included in a funding application.
Funding
for the setting up of the allotments to come from
either/or/and
Age Concern
Local Health Authority
AONB
Match funding
by volunteers to be part of the grant application;
all volunteers to keep a record of time given eg meetings
etc starting from meeting with Gareth Jones on 28th
January 2009. Quotes for site works to be gathered
initially to gauge viability.
Some monies
to be transferred from Older People’s Strategy
grant to put into an allotment fund. Criw Niwbwrch
Cyf to be approached at next general meeting (Feb
10th) re supporting allotment initiative.
GT suggested
Thompson and Morgan for buying seeds etc with discount
It was agreed
to call the group “Allotments(W) Niwbwrch Allotments”

to Gareth Jones and advise him that in principle we
are interested

to finding out if he is interested in leasing a portion
to the group
c) Contact Jamie Cunliffe re digging out plot and
preparing hard standing for vehicles and entrance
from road to determine possible costings
d) Contact fencing company recommended by GT re quote
of appropriate fencing for whole of plot
e) Seek a quote for sheds for 4 plots (if plot shared,
shed to be shared)
f) Speak to neighbours on the other side of the road
to the site
g) Contact Julie Rogers re her experience of setting
up an allotment and if she is willing to speak to
the group at a future date |
